Learning in Safeguarding - Summer 2025
On 16th July 2025, 32 professionals joined in discussions to explore the topic: Learning in Safeguarding.
The Sunderland Safeguarding Children Partnership (SSCP) places a strong emphasis on the priority of sharing and embedding learning. As Paula Steel, Head of Service for Practice Development, Participation, and Principal Social Worker at Together for Children, noted in her opening summary:
‘Learning and development encompass not just structured training sessions but the entire process of understanding what we do well and what we need to improve. This approach includes multi-agency audits, learning reviews, and practitioner forums, which are essential tools for reflection and growth. By pooling our resources and sharing training developed by different agencies, we can reduce duplication, save time, and build a more consistent approach to safeguarding practices. This collective effort not only strengthens our capacity to respond holistically to children's needs but also reinforces our shared commitment to protecting, supporting, and empowering every child.’
The forum is thus a vital step in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration across the partnership.
To frame our discussion the practitioners were asked:
How can we ensure that learning opportunities across the Safeguarding Children Partnership are shared and embedded, so our multi-agency workforce has the skills and knowledge to safeguard children and young people in Sunderland?
